Phillip Phillips, new 'American Idol'

Los Angeles-blues guitarist Phillip Phillips is the new "American Idol" after he defeated Wednesday night to Latino teen Jessica Sanchez.

Phillips, 21 years old and employed at a pawn shop, received more votes from viewers Sanchez, 16, resident of Chula Vista, California.

Phillips's victory meant that extend the winning streak of five consecutive men of "American Idol." The last woman to win was Jordin Sparks, 17, in 2007.

During the performance of three songs on Tuesday between Phillips and Sanchez, the show's judges praised his performance in all areas. A Sanchez was criticized their interpretation of their last song, "Change Nothing", which was considered mediocre.

Phillips, who consistently received a high number of votes all season, got a recording contract.
